Bharti Airtel has formally requested the Department of Telecom (DoT) to grant it the same relief on Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues as provided to Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL). Executive Vice-Chairman Gopal Vittal confirmed the company's stance during the recent earnings call, stating that multiple letters have been dispatched seeking clarification and parity.
Regulatory Scrutiny
The core of Airtel's appeal hinges on equitable treatment by the government. Vodafone Idea received relief from the Union Cabinet, based on a Supreme Court order, which froze its AGR dues at ₹87,695 crore for the period between FY 2006-07 and FY 2018-19. These frozen amounts are still subject to reassessment. Bharti Airtel, facing its own substantial liability, is pushing for identical terms.
Financial Implications
Collectively, telecom operators face an AGR liability exceeding ₹1.77 lakh crore up to FY 2024-25. Bharti Airtel's portion of this stands at ₹51,091 crore. Other major players include Vodafone Idea with ₹89,952 crore, Tata Group with ₹20,426 crore, MTNL with ₹14,462 crore, and Reliance Jio Infocomm with ₹1,984 crore. The outcome of Airtel's plea could significantly impact its financial health and competitive positioning within the Indian telecom market. A positive response would alleviate considerable financial pressure, while a denial might necessitate alternative strategies for managing its debt obligations.
