India Sees Massive Surge in AI Course Enrollments
Indian professionals are driving an unprecedented enrollment boom in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technology courses. This trend highlights a critical need for upskilling as individuals race to future-proof their careers in a rapidly evolving job market. Major Edtech platforms are responding by expanding their course catalogs and learning options.
Edtech Platforms Expand Offerings
Platforms such as Simplilearn, upGrad, Udemy, Emeritus, and Coursera are witnessing a significant spike in demand. Courses focusing on agentic AI, generative AI, and cybersecurity are particularly popular. These companies are doubling down on their offerings, introducing more courses, enhancing learning experiences, forging new university partnerships, and providing accessible pricing through discounts and flexible payment plans to bridge vital skill gaps.
The Driving Force Behind Upskilling
Industry executives attribute this surge to AI's transformative potential and its increasing integration into organizational operations, product development, and customer experiences. Big tech firms and Indian IT services companies are actively seeking professionals with AI fluency, both for traditional roles and specialized AI positions. Krishna Kumar, founder and CEO of Simplilearn, noted that demand for their AI programs has grown over 60% in the past year, with over half of this demand originating from India. He added that professionals with 5-15 years of experience form a significant portion of learners, recognizing the inadequacy of traditional skills in an AI-driven economy.
AI Talent Demand Projected to Soar
Demand for AI talent in India is expected to grow substantially, projected to increase from 600,000–650,000 to over 1,250,000 between 2022 and 2027, according to a Deloitte-Nasscom report. This report also indicates that two out of three Indians plan to learn at least one digital skill, with AI and machine learning topping the list.
Udemy has reported an astonishing 859% increase in demand for AI-related programs over the past year. Shift Towards Applied and Advanced Learning
While younger professionals are a significant demographic, there is a discernible shift towards more applied and advanced learning. Learners are moving from basic AI awareness to practical implementation and deeper skill development. Coursera has introduced over 2,700 new courses, specializations, and certificates, doubling its Generative AI course offerings from last year, and experiencing a 450% growth in AI course enrollments in India between 2023 and 2025.
upGrad observes mid- and senior-level professionals seeking to reposition themselves as domain experts, requiring clarity on AI strategy, system scaling, and build-vs-buy decisions. This indicates a maturation of the AI learning landscape, moving beyond foundational knowledge to strategic application.
