Nationwide AI Skilling Drive Launched
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a sweeping nationwide program designed to train up to 10 lakh individuals in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The launch occurred Tuesday during the Rajasthan AI summit, serving as a precursor to the larger AI Impact Summit scheduled for India next month.
Government's AI Vision and Investment
Vaishnaw articulated a vision where AI will become as ubiquitous as electricity in everyday life. He emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's directive to ensure universal access to AI technology, positioning Rajasthan as a crucial player in this national effort. The minister highlighted India's burgeoning AI ecosystem, noting approximately $70 billion in investments flowing into AI and data centers across the country.
Affordable Compute Power for All
A core objective of India's AI Mission is democratizing computing power. Vaishnaw pointed out that expensive GPUs are often inaccessible to many, leading to concentrated AI computing power in large corporations in Western countries. India is actively working to provide high-quality computing resources at significantly lower costs, ensuring students, start-ups, and researchers can readily access them. The initiative has already made 38,000 GPUs available under its "common compute" framework.
Global Recognition for India's AI Efforts
India's strides in AI have garnered international attention, with several countries observing its approach. Stanford University's latest AI Index report has placed India among the top three AI nations globally, alongside China and the United States. This recognition underscores the nation's growing influence and potential in the artificial intelligence domain.
