Valuation Surge Reflects AI Enthusiasm
Voice artificial intelligence innovator ElevenLabs announced a substantial $500 million Series D funding round, catapulting its valuation to $11 billion. This marks a significant escalation, more than tripling its worth from a year ago and bringing its total funding to $781 million since its 2022 inception. Sequoia Capital spearheaded the round, with Andrew Reed joining the company's board. Existing investors like Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and ICONIQ significantly increased their stakes, signaling strong conviction in the startup's trajectory. New capital also flowed in from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Evantic Capital, and BOND, alongside continued support from prior backers BroadLight, NFDG, and Valor Capital.
Expanding Beyond Voice to Full Audio
Initially recognized for its human-like AI text-to-speech models, ElevenLabs is broadening its technological scope. The company is now developing foundational models across the entire audio spectrum, encompassing speech-to-text, sound effects, dubbing, music generation, and conversational AI. Co-founder Piotr Dabkowski emphasized this evolution, stating, "We started by building a voice that could sound human — and we did. Today, we are building foundational models across the full audio stack... with a world-leading research team." This comprehensive approach aims to redefine industry benchmarks through optimized product experiences.
India as a Strategic Growth Hub
ElevenLabs is also aggressively expanding its footprint in India, which it identified as its largest global market. The company recently appointed Karthik Rajaram as general manager and country head for India and collaborates with prominent Indian firms like Meesho and Pocket FM. This strategic focus includes augmenting the local team, investing in AI audio research tailored for the region, and supporting local initiatives. Co-founder Mati Staniszewski noted the funding will enable the company to "transform how we interact with technology altogether," including enhancing creative offerings by integrating audio with video and building advanced conversational agents.
