A New Benchmark for Indian Cinema
Jio Studios has redefined success with its latest cinematic offering, which has not only dominated the box office for over 60 days but also secured the top spot on Netflix globally. This unprecedented achievement, with a worldwide gross revenue of ₹1,344.64 crore, is a testament to a story that has deeply resonated with audiences, transcending conventional marketing metrics. "It is something that we can’t script, it’s something marketing money can’t buy," stated Jyoti Deshpande, president (media and content business) at Reliance Industries. The film’s triumph is attributed to its genuine connection with viewers, who have driven its success through repeat viewings and word-of-mouth buzz.
Strategic Vision: 'Dhurandhar 2' and Beyond
The conviction behind the franchise is palpable, with both parts of the film shot concurrently. This bold move, pre-emptively announcing the sequel's release date alongside the first film, reflects a profound belief in the narrative. "We put our money where our mouth was, we did something that has never been done anywhere in the world," Deshpande remarked. The upcoming 'Dhurandhar 2' is slated for a five-language release, building on the original's success even in a single language, which remarkably outperformed regional films and saw significant contributions from Southern states. The film’s popularity extends internationally, topping viewership charts in Pakistan as well.
Redefining Storytelling Grammar
'Dhurandhar' challenged industry norms by greenlighting a film that defied typical commercial checkboxes: a mature theme, significant gore, and a nearly 100% Muslim cast filmed primarily in Pakistan. Deshpande identified this as "clutter-breaking" and more impactful than overtly patriotic narratives. The strategy of chapterised storytelling, inspired by OTT binge-watching habits, was implemented to manage the film's extensive runtime and engage viewers on the big screen. This approach, combined with layered characters and a focus on "patience and vigilance" over rapid action, aimed to translate the complexities of deep-state espionage effectively. The seamless execution across all departments, from cinematography to prosthetics, was described as "a little bit of divine intervention."
Jio Studios' Global Ambition
Jio Studios, through its partnership with Sikhya Entertainment, aims to champion "India to the world." Deshpande expressed a desire for both commercial blockbusters and smaller, character-driven films like those produced by Sikhya to gain international traction. The goal is to control India's narrative on a global stage, moving away from portrayals that do not serve the country's image. "India as a country and Indians need to be celebrated," she asserted, questioning why Indian films struggle for global celebration when international productions are readily embraced. Jio Studios' commitment is to ensure Indian stories are told from an Indian perspective, projecting a positive and celebratory image of the nation worldwide.
