A New Brew
Vikram Khurana has engineered a remarkable comeback, transforming Kaapi Solutions into a dominant force in India's burgeoning coffee machine and solutions sector. The company posted an operating revenue of ₹107.73 crore, with a current annual run rate (ARR) of ₹125 crore, marking a significant resurgence after a challenging departure from his previous venture.
Building the Backbone
Khurana, once a finalist at the World Barista Championship, co-founded Kaapi Machines before venturing into Kaapi Solutions in 2017. This new enterprise offers a full spectrum of coffee services, including imported machine sales, roasting, grinding, and barista training. The company has installed over 14,000 machines across 15,000 cafés, 2,000 offices, and 1,000+ homes.
Market Growth Signals
India's specialty coffee market is experiencing rapid expansion, fueled by rising consumer demand for sophisticated brews and convenient on-the-go options. A Redseer Strategy Consultants report forecasts the outside coffee market to reach $2.6-3.2 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 15-20%.
Overcoming Hurdles
Despite market promise, challenges persist. Khurana notes the misuse of the 'specialty coffee' label and a critical lack of consistent training. He points out India's ingrained tea culture and later café opening hours as obstacles, contrasting with markets where coffee consumption begins earlier.
Future Outlook
Khurana sees immense potential in Tier II and III cities, where consumers are increasingly seeking premium tastes and experiences. Kaapi Solutions aims to capitalize on this by expanding its D2C brand, KofiHaus, and ensuring robust after-sales service, positioning coffee machines as standard household appliances within the next two decades.
