Record Winter Peak Demand
Delhi's power demand surged to a new winter high on Friday, recording an unprecedented 6,087 megawatts (MW) at its peak. The electricity consumption figure, registered at 10:39 AM, marks the highest-ever peak demand for the winter season in the city's history. This substantial increase reflects a steady rise in energy needs, even as temperatures remain cold.
Power discom BSES confirmed that its two utilities, BRPL and BYPL, successfully managed their respective peak demands of 2,508 MW and 1,209 MW. This new record surpasses the previous winter maximum of 5,655 MW and highlights a consistent upward trend in Delhi's energy consumption over the past five years. In the winter of 2023-24, demand had reached 5,816 MW, indicating continuous growth.
BSES's Preparedness and Green Initiatives
To ensure uninterrupted power supply throughout the winter months, BSES has implemented comprehensive measures. These include securing long-term power tie-ups, enhancing the use of renewable energy sources, engaging in power banking with other states, and deploying energy storage solutions. Advanced demand forecasting is also a key component of their strategy.
The utility stated that more than half of its winter power requirement is currently being met through clean energy sources like solar, wind, hydro, and waste-to-energy facilities. This focus on green power helps reduce Delhi's carbon footprint, with over 50 percent of a projected winter demand of around 3,900 MW for BRPL and BYPL areas sourced sustainably.
Advanced Technology Deployment
BSES is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools to achieve more accurate demand forecasting. These systems factor in variables such as weather conditions, consumer behavior patterns, and other critical data points. Surplus power generated during periods of low demand in winter is being banked with partner states like Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Kerala, and Chhattisgarh.
This banked power is intended for use during the high-demand summer months. Additionally, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are being utilized to store excess power during off-peak hours and discharge it during peak periods. Coordinated grid management measures are also in place to maintain overall system stability and reliability.
Outlook and Commitment
A BSES spokesperson emphasized the utility's full preparedness to meet the city's winter energy demands. "Through smart planning, extensive renewable integration, robust banking mechanisms, advanced storage utilization and AI-driven forecasting, we are committed to ensuring reliable, clean and green power supply to over 53 lakh consumers and nearly 2.25 crore residents across the city," the spokesperson stated.
