The American Petroleum Institute (API), a powerful global energy standards organization, is set to inaugurate its first formal representative office in India. This significant step is strategically timed against the backdrop of ongoing US-India trade negotiations and India's ascent as the world's third-largest energy consumer. The API's decision to establish its presence in New Delhi underscores a desire for direct engagement with key decision-makers. Proximity to government agencies, regulators, public sector undertakings, manufacturers, and academic institutions is paramount. Anchal Liddar, Senior Vice President of Global Industry Services at API, highlighted India's significant energy transformation as a primary driver for the office's establishment. "India will need upgraded infrastructure, safety frameworks and globally harmonised standards, and that is where API's experience becomes highly relevant," Liddar stated. The nation's increasing energy needs, coupled with a push for modernization, creates a fertile ground for API's expertise in developing and implementing robust standards.

For decades, API's standards have been implicitly or explicitly used in India. However, the formal office signals a proactive approach to ensure these global benchmarks are more readily adopted and adapted to India's specific requirements.
