Market Opening Signals Mixed Global Cues
Indian stock markets are set for a potentially mixed opening as investors digest a confluence of global and domestic signals heading into the final trading session of the year. The GIFT Nifty futures indicate a marginal positive start, trading higher by 25 points.
This comes after a cautious trading day on Friday, where both the benchmark NSE Nifty 50 and the BSE Sensex concluded lower. The Nifty 50 shed 100 points, or 0.38%, to close at 26,042, while the Sensex fell 367 points, or 0.43%, ending the session at 85,041.
Asian Markets Tread Cautiously
Asian markets commenced Monday's session on a mixed note. Japan's Nikkei 225 index saw a decline of 0.55%, with the broader Topix losing 0.26%. In contrast, South Korea's Kospi rose by 0.62%, and the Kosdaq index gained 0.19%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index futures also pointed to a slightly lower opening compared to its previous close.
US Futures Show Muted Sentiment
Futures tied to major US stock benchmarks traded on a muted note in early hours. S&P 500 futures registered a marginal uptick, as did those for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The Nasdaq-100 futures hovered around the flatline, indicating a lack of strong directional bias from the US market.
Dollar Edges Lower, Crude Oil Rises
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which gauges the dollar's strength against a basket of major currencies, saw a slight dip of 0.07% to trade at 97.95. Meanwhile, crude oil prices continued their upward trend. WTI crude was trading 0.93% higher at $57.27 per barrel, and Brent crude saw a rise of 0.88% to $61.16 per barrel.
FII Selling, DII Buying Continues
Provisional data from the National Stock Exchange for December 26, 2025, revealed that Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers, offloading shares worth ₹317.56 crore. Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) showed robust buying interest, acquiring shares worth ₹1,772.56 crore.
Gold Prices Near Record Highs
Gold prices remain elevated, with 24-carat gold trading around its all-time high. The rate for 10 grams of 24-carat gold was quoted at ₹1,40,050, marking a 1.29% increase from the previous day. In Delhi, 24-carat gold was priced at ₹1,39,810 per 10 grams, and 18-carat gold was at ₹1,05,037.5 per 10 grams.
Sectoral Performance on Friday
In Friday's trading session, the Metals – Non Ferrous sector stocks emerged as the top performers, registering a market capitalization increase of 2.3%. Conversely, sugar stocks faced the steepest decline, falling by 3%, followed by the rubber sector. Paints and Pigments stocks also experienced a downturn.
Impact
These mixed global cues, coupled with domestic data like FII/DII flows and commodity prices, are likely to influence investor sentiment and trading activity in the Indian stock market. The cautious trading in major global markets might lead to volatility. The rising gold and crude oil prices could impact inflation expectations and certain sectors. The net selling by FIIs warrants attention, while DII support could provide some cushion.
Impact Rating: 6/10
