Secret Alchemist Secures $3M Seed Funding From Unilever Ventures
Overview

D2C clean perfume brand Secret Alchemist has secured $3 million in seed funding led by Hindustan Unilever's venture arm, Unilever Ventures. The capital infusion will fuel portfolio expansion, R&D, and team growth. This investment highlights HUL's strategy to acquire stakes in fast-growing D2C beauty startups.

Funding Details

D2C perfume retailer Secret Alchemist announced a $3 million (₹27.1 crore) seed funding round. Unilever Ventures, the venture capital arm of consumer goods giant Hindustan Unilever, led the investment. Existing investor DSG Consumer Partners also participated in the round, which involved both primary and secondary transactions.

Secret Alchemist's Vision

The brand focuses on "clean" fragrances, drawing inspiration from Indian aromatherapy and perfumery traditions. Secret Alchemist plans to utilize the new capital to broaden its product portfolio, invest in research and development, and strengthen its leadership and core team. Founded in 2021 as a wellness brand by Ankita Thadani and Akash Valia, it later pivoted to perfumes after actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu joined as a co-founder.

HUL's Strategic Shift

This investment aligns with Hindustan Unilever's broader strategy to tap into India's burgeoning beauty and personal care market, particularly in fast-growing D2C segments. The FMCG major has increasingly favored minority investments and strategic partnerships over in-house brand building to gain traction in categories where its legacy brands face challenges. Fragrances have emerged as a key growth area, driven by premiumisation and rising disposable incomes. HUL's recent acquisition of skincare brand Minimalist for ₹2,995 crore exemplifies this approach, securing a strong position in the ingredient-first skincare segment.
