Bayer, ADM Boost Maharashtra Soy Farmers: 1 Lakh Growers Targeted
Overview

Bayer AG and US agribusiness ADM are extending their three-year partnership to support soybean farmers in Maharashtra, India. The program will quadruple its reach to 100,000 growers, expanding cultivation area to 200,000 hectares. It focuses on sustainable practices and aims to enhance farmers' economic resilience through enhanced production and post-harvest management.

Germany's Bayer AG and U.S. agribusiness giant ADM have extended their strategic partnership aimed at bolstering soybean cultivation in India's Maharashtra state. The collaboration, originally launched in June 2022, will now run for an additional three years, significantly scaling up its reach.

Program Expansion Details

The initiative is set to quadruple its impact, targeting 100,000 soybean farmers, a substantial increase from its previous scope. Cultivation area under the program will expand from 35,000 hectares to a massive 200,000 hectares. This expansion is geographically focused, adding Nanded, Parbhani, Hingoli, and Solapur districts to the existing areas of Latur, Dharashiv, and Beed within Maharashtra.

Sustainable Practices Focus

Central to the expanded program is the adoption of sustainable farming methodologies, guided by the ProTerra Foundation framework. This includes comprehensive support across production management, biodiversity protection, rigorous program monitoring, crop documentation, and effective post-harvest management strategies. Bayer has actively conducted training sessions on good agricultural practices and integrated pest management, utilizing audio calls to reach over 58,000 farmers. ADM's agronomist teams also receive ongoing training in crop cultivation and pesticide management.

Economic Resilience Goal

"By leveraging ADM's market linkages and global resources, we aim to equip 100,000 farmers with the tools to strengthen economic resilience," stated Amrendra Mishra, Managing Director of Ag Services and Oilseeds and Country Manager India at ADM. ADM, which operates over 50 crop development and procurement centers in India, views this as a strategic move to deepen its commitment to the Indian agricultural sector. The partnership highlights a concerted effort by multinational corporations to invest in and professionalize Indian farming, fostering more sustainable and economically viable operations.
