Aviation Ministry Seeks Fare Transparency
India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has formally requested average fare data from key airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air. The request targets fares for economy and premium economy seats on all routes operated between December 1 and December 15.
IndiGo Flight Cancellations Spark Scrutiny
This move comes after IndiGo, the nation's largest carrier with a 65% market share, was forced to cancel approximately 4,500 flights last month due to severe pilot shortages. These cancellations stranded thousands of passengers and caused widespread disruption across the country's air travel network. Fares on certain routes reportedly surged during this period, leading the government to implement temporary price caps.
Antitrust Probe Into Market Dominance
Separately, India's competition watchdog, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), is investigating IndiGo for potential abuse of its dominant market position. A complaint alleges that IndiGo cancelled flights and then offered seats at significantly higher prices. The fare data sought by the DGCA is intended to assist the CCI in analyzing airfare patterns across the industry during the disruptive period. While the inquiry is focused on IndiGo's alleged actions, the broad request for data covers multiple major carriers.
