New Powertrain Options
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles officially launched petrol-powered variants of its flagship Harrier and Safari SUVs on Wednesday. This move diversifies the powertrain options, previously limited to diesel engines, aiming to attract a broader customer base.
Pricing and Features
The new petrol versions start at ₹12.89 lakh for the Harrier and ₹13.29 lakh for the Safari, with prices extending up to ₹24.68 lakh and ₹25.19 lakh respectively for top-end automatic trims (ex-showroom, New Delhi). Both models are powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and are available with manual and automatic transmissions. The vehicle architecture, platform, and feature set remain consistent with their diesel counterparts, including a large touchscreen infotainment system and advanced safety aids.
Strategic Expansion
This introduction marks the first time Tata Motors has offered petrol engines for the Harrier and Safari. The company stated the new engine complies with current emission standards and addresses demand from customers, particularly in urban markets, who prefer petrol-powered SUVs. The move is intended to defend market share and capture incremental buyers in the highly competitive mid-size and large SUV categories.
Safety Assurance
All petrol variants of the Harrier and Safari have secured a five-star rating under the Bharat NCAP safety assessment program. This certification extends across the entire model range, reinforcing Tata Motors' commitment to safety for its customers.
