Navy Embraces Ka-band for Communications Overhaul

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in partnership with global satellite communications firm Viasat Inc., is set to deploy high-capacity Ka-band satellite systems to advance the Indian Navy's communications modernization program. Implementation is slated to begin this month, marking a significant upgrade in the Navy's network capabilities.

Under an existing agreement with Indian defense forces, Viasat's Ka-band technology will integrate with BSNL's current L-band infrastructure. The goal is to provide naval platforms with more secure, resilient, and faster data transmission. Viasat's international government team will support the rollout through its Communication Services segment.

Robert Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, stated, "BSNL is proud to support the Indian Navy's SATCOM modernisation by delivering advanced, resilient connectivity through our partnership with Viasat." This collaboration underscores a strategic shift toward a multi-band, multi-constellation satellite communications architecture.

Enhanced Connectivity at Sea

The integration of BSNL's Gateway Earth Station with Viasat's expansive satellite network is expected to significantly benefit the Indian Navy. Users should anticipate wider geographical coverage, accelerated data transfer speeds, and improved reliability for operations conducted at sea. This upgrade is part of Viasat's ongoing engagement with the Indian government across various sectors, including past support for disaster-response networks and early-warning systems.

"With the equipment already in India and installation activities starting this month, we are pleased to support the Navy as it modernises its satellite communications," said Gautam Sharma, Managing Director of Viasat India. Todd McDonell, President of International Government at Viasat, added that combining L-band resilience with Ka-band capacity will critically enhance mission-critical naval operations.
