Craftsman Automation Faces Tax Demand, Plans Appeal
Craftsman Automation has received a tax demand order from the Joint Commissioner of CGST Faridabad for the Financial Year 2019-20, totaling ₹0.52 crore. This demand comprises ₹11.07 lakh in tax and ₹40.75 lakh towards interest and penalty, linked to the alleged wrongful utilization of Input Tax Credit (ITC).
The company disputes the demand, asserting its compliance with tax regulations, and has announced plans to file an appeal against the order. Craftsman Automation stated it anticipates no material financial or operational impact from this demand, a key point investors will monitor. While the company is contesting the order, potential risks include the costs associated with the demand if the appeal is unsuccessful, and the possibility of further scrutiny or similar demands for other periods if the underlying issue is not favorably resolved.
Craftsman Automation is a diversified engineering firm operating in automotive (powertrain, aluminium products) and industrial segments. This is not the company's first tax dispute. It previously faced a CGST demand of ₹962.89 lakh plus penalty for service valuation issues spanning 2017-18 to 2023-24, which was upheld by the Commissioner (Appeals), Gurugram. Additionally, the company is contesting an income tax order for a ₹5.30 crore disallowance for AY 2022-23.
In the auto ancillaries sector, Craftsman Automation competes with firms like Tata AutoComp Systems and Endurance Technologies. While peers may have different specialties, such as Tata AutoComp's global reach or Endurance Technologies' leadership in aluminium die-casting, Craftsman Automation focuses on precision engineering and manufacturing across its segments. Managing tax disputes is a common operational aspect for companies in this industry, with varying specific challenges.
