What just happened

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) accelerated its operational pace in Q2 FY27, commissioning 419 MW of new capacity. This represents a substantial 130% increase compared to the 182 MW commissioned in the same period last year. For the first half of the fiscal year, total executions reached 645 MW of utility-scale projects and 161.2 MWhr of storage capacity.

Key Project Commissions

Several strategic projects went live in H1 FY27, including the 100.8 MW Jewali Wind project and the 227.5 MW Kalasar FDRE solar project, which also included a 101.2 MWhr Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Other additions include the 100 MW Kayathar captive project and a 72.5 MW captive project for Tata Steel.

The Roadmap

Tata Power management has outlined an aggressive expansion schedule. The company expects to commission over 2 GW of projects in H2 FY27, comprising a mix of solar, wind, and storage. By the end of FY27, total operational capacity is projected to reach approximately 9.3 GW. Looking further ahead, the company aims to reach 12 GW of total operational capacity by the end of FY28.

Risks to watch

While the execution pipeline is strong, meeting the 2 GW target for H2 FY27 remains critical. Potential risks include supply chain bottlenecks, land acquisition hurdles, and project commissioning delays which are standard in the renewable energy sector.

What to track next

Investors should keep a close watch on the actual commissioning progress in H2 FY27 against the stated 2 GW guidance. Consistent execution of this volume will validate the company's ability to scale its infrastructure ahead of the FY28 target.
