Dhunseri Tea & Industries Credit Rating Downgraded by CARE Ratings

CARE Ratings has downgraded Dhunseri Tea & Industries Ltd's bank facilities, citing weaker financial performance and rising operating costs. The company's long-term rating is now 'CARE A-; Stable'. Investors should note the firm's reliance on asset monetization and promoter support to manage upcoming debt obligations amidst a challenging tea production environment.

Dhunseri Tea & Industries Credit Rating Downgraded

Long-term bank facilities downgraded to 'CARE A-; Stable' from 'CARE A; Stable'. Short-term facilities downgraded to 'CARE A2' from 'CARE A2+'.

Reader Takeaway: Rising labor costs and debt pressures impact margins; promoter support remains a critical stability factor.

What just happened

CARE Ratings has revised the credit ratings for Rs 147.26 crore in total bank facilities held by Dhunseri Tea & Industries Ltd (DTIL). The long-term facilities, accounting for Rs 146.76 crore, saw a downgrade reflecting the company’s current financial standing. The smaller short-term facility of Rs 0.50 crore was also adjusted downward to 'CARE A2'.

Why this matters

The rating downgrade signals mounting financial strain on the company. Sustained operating losses continue to squeeze debt coverage indicators. With significant debt repayment obligations of roughly Rs 35 crore annually expected in FY27 and FY28, the company’s liquidity is increasingly tied to cash accruals and the strategic sale of tea gardens.

Operational Challenges

The tea industry’s labor-intensive nature remains a primary hurdle. Wage costs currently consume 50-55% of the company's sales costs. A recent hike in daily wages to Rs 280, up from Rs 250, has put direct pressure on PBILDT margins. Furthermore, the company’s heavy concentration of tea gardens in Assam leaves production vulnerable to volatile weather patterns that have already hampered output.

The Role of Promoter Support

Despite the rating revision, CARE Ratings noted the backing of the Dhunseri group as a key strength. The company maintains financial flexibility through the promoters' extensive industry experience and their track record of providing unsecured loans whenever liquidity gaps emerge.

What to track next

Investors should monitor the company’s ability to improve operating efficiencies and profitability. Future debt servicing capability is now a critical monitorable, especially given the company's dependence on asset monetization to bridge liquidity gaps.
