Tata Power Finishes Key Transmission Project in Uttar Pradesh
Tata Power announced the completion of 154 circuit kilometers (Ckm) of Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission lines for the South East UP Power Transmission Company Limited (SEUPPTCL) project. This milestone expands Tata Power's operational transmission network to 5,466 Ckm, enhancing power evacuation capacity by over 4,000 MW and strengthening Uttar Pradesh's electricity infrastructure.
Project Completion Details
The completed lines include the 400 kV Tanda–Gonda and 400 kV Gonda–Basti double circuit lines. With this commissioning, all Extra High Voltage (EHV) lines and substations for SEUPPTCL are now operational, fulfilling the project's full scope.
Boosting Uttar Pradesh's Power Grid
This expansion significantly boosts the state's power evacuation capacity by over 4,000 MW. It strengthens Uttar Pradesh's transmission infrastructure, vital for grid stability and ensuring a reliable power supply to meet growing electricity demand. Tata Power's expanded network reinforces its role in modernizing India's energy infrastructure.
History of the SEUPPTCL Asset
The SEUPPTCL project was initially developed by Spanish firm Isolux Corsan and faced financial distress and delays, leading to insolvency proceedings. Resurgent Power Ventures Pte. Ltd., a joint venture in which Tata Power holds a 26% stake, acquired SEUPPTCL as a stressed asset through a resolution process. This acquisition and subsequent completion align with Tata Power's strategy to grow its transmission business by reviving such assets.
Expanded Transmission Network
Tata Power's total operational transmission network now stands at 5,466 Ckm. As of early 2026, its operational transmission network was over 5,300 Ckm. This growth contributes to the company's overall transmission network expansion, supporting national infrastructure goals.
Operational Considerations
The SEUPPTCL project was previously a stressed asset that underwent a complex insolvency resolution. Challenges within the broader transmission sector, such as grid congestion and execution difficulties, can pose risks. Tata Power has been implementing technological solutions to reduce transmission line tripping.
Transmission Sector Landscape
Tata Power's 5,466 Ckm operational network positions it among major transmission utilities. Competitors like Adani Energy Solutions, Kalpataru Projects International, and KEC International are also actively expanding their transmission portfolios.
Network Growth Figures
Before this completion, the SEUPPTCL project had approximately 900 km of transmission links under construction and 5 substations as of September 2022. As of February 2025, Tata Power's total transmission portfolio stood at 7,047 Ckm, with 4,633 Ckm operational and 2,414 Ckm under construction.
