Precision Wires India Begins Copper Rod Production at Valvada Plant

Precision Wires India Limited has begun commercial production of copper rods at its Valvada plant in Gujarat. This marks a significant development for the company's backward integration strategy. The plant recently received crucial Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification under IS 12444, a standard for copper wire rods used in electrical and industrial applications. The certification was granted on March 18, 2026, paving the way for production that commenced on March 26, 2026.

This move allows Precision Wires India to gain in-house control over a key raw material, aiming to enhance its supply chain reliability and potentially lower input costs for its core wire manufacturing operations. The Valvada plant's initial output will contribute to the company's overall installed base, which stands at approximately 48,000 metric tons per annum (MTPA) for winding wires, with further expansions planned. The company had previously approved capital expenditure, including Rs 5 crore for the Valvada plant, towards increasing its copper rod manufacturing capacity.

The operationalization of the Valvada plant means a new manufacturing line for copper rods is now active. This is expected to decrease the company's reliance on external copper rod suppliers and improve cost management. The output from the Valvada plant will primarily be used for captive consumption in Precision Wires India's winding wire products.

Major players in India's copper manufacturing sector include Sterlite Copper (Vedanta Ltd), Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), and Hindalco Industries (Birla Copper). While these are large integrated players, Precision Wires India's strategy is focused on captive consumption for its specialized winding wire products. Other companies in the copper rod segment are Citizen Metalloys and Rajnandini Metal Limited, highlighting a competitive market where quality and cost-efficiency are critical.

Investors will likely track the ramp-up of production at the Valvada plant and its utilization rate. Key performance indicators to monitor include the actual financial contribution of the captive copper rod production to the company's profitability, any reported changes in input costs for winding wire manufacturing, and future capacity expansion plans or operational efficiencies announced by Precision Wires India. The market performance of the company's stock amid these operational developments will also be of interest.
