Great Eastern Shipping Welcomes New Kamsarmax Vessel
Great Eastern Shipping Co. Ltd. (GE Shipping) has received delivery of a 2014 Japanese-built Kamsarmax Dry Bulk Carrier named "Jag Abhishek." This strategic acquisition, measuring approximately 81,094 dwt, was financed entirely through the company's internal accruals.
The addition of "Jag Abhishek" brings GE Shipping's total owned fleet to 41 vessels. The fleet now comprises 26 Tankers and 15 Dry Bulk Carriers, with a combined deadweight tonnage (dwt) capacity of 3.28 million dwt. The company reported that its current capacity utilization is close to 100%.
This latest acquisition aligns with GE Shipping's ongoing strategy of fleet modernization and expansion. The company's ability to finance the purchase internally highlights its financial strength and access to capital. The Kamsarmax vessel enhances the company's capabilities in transporting key commodities like coal, iron ore, and grain.
GE Shipping's fleet strategy focuses on divesting older vessels while acquiring younger, more efficient ships, supported by robust financial health and ample cash reserves. A Kamsarmax vessel is a type of dry bulk carrier typically around 80,000-82,000 DWT, valued for its versatility. Deadweight tonnage (DWT) is a primary metric indicating a ship's total carrying capacity.
Looking ahead, GE Shipping plans further fleet optimization. In the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2027 (Q1 FY27), the company intends to purchase one secondhand Medium Range Tanker and sell two existing Medium Range Tankers, identified as "Jag Prakash" and "Jag Pankhi."
In the broader Indian shipping market, GE Shipping's fleet of 41 vessels and 3.28 million dwt capacity positions it as a major player. Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), a state-owned entity, operates a comparable fleet of bulk carriers and tankers.
Investors will be tracking the successful completion of the planned tanker transactions in Q1 FY27.
