Power Grid Acquires Jam Khambhaliya REZ Transmission for Rs 19.22 Crore

Acquisition Value: Rs 19.22 Crore.
Project Capacity: 6,500 MW renewable energy evacuation.

Reader Takeaway: Expands transmission footprint for renewable integration; execution remains the primary long-term driver for regulated revenue growth.

What just happened

Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has completed the 100% acquisition of Jam Khambhaliya REZ Transmission Limited. The company won the project through the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process managed by PFC Consulting Limited. The total consideration is approximately Rs 19.22 crore, which covers equity shares and the transfer of all associated assets and liabilities.

Why this matters

This acquisition is a strategic move to facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the national grid. The project is designed to evacuate 6,500 MW of power, comprising 5,500 MW from the Jam Khambhaliya REZ (Phase II) and 1,000 MW from the Jamnagar region (Phase I). It involves building a new Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation in Kalyanpur, Gujarat, along with extensive 765 kV transmission infrastructure.

What changes now

Following the acquisition, the entity will now focus on obtaining necessary regulatory clearances, including the grant of a transmission license and the formal adoption of transmission charges from the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). Once operational, these assets will provide the company with long-term, stable, and regulated transmission revenue, consistent with its existing business model.

Risks to watch

As with all large-scale infrastructure projects, the core risks involve the timely execution of construction works, particularly the completion of the GIS substation and the laying of 765 kV transmission lines. Any delay in project commissioning could impact the scheduled revenue realization timeline.

What to track next

Investors should look for updates on the receipt of the transmission license from the CERC and progress reports regarding the construction timelines for the Gujarat-based transmission infrastructure.
