IndiGrid Boosts Energy Storage Portfolio with Gujarat BESS Acquisition
IndiGrid Infrastructure Trust announced it has finalized the acquisition of Gujarat BESS Private Limited for an enterprise value of about ₹573 crore. This move adds a key Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project to IndiGrid's operational assets.
Strategic Expansion into Energy Storage
The acquisition marks a significant diversification for IndiGrid, expanding its portfolio beyond traditional power transmission into the crucial energy storage sector. By incorporating BESS, IndiGrid aims to enhance grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy sources, which often face intermittency issues. The project operates under a Build Own Operate (BOO) model, meaning IndiGrid will directly manage its operations, aligning with its strategy for owning and managing revenue-generating infrastructure.
Project and Concession Details
The newly acquired BESS project is designed to deliver annual revenues exceeding ₹97 crore over its 12-year concession period. This project was secured by IndiGrid through tariff-based competitive bidding from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) in March 2024.
IndiGrid's Growth Trajectory
Established in 2016, IndiGrid is India's largest power sector infrastructure investment trust, known for acquiring and managing low-risk, long-term contracted projects. This BESS acquisition follows recent completions, such as Gadag Transmission Limited, and agreements for Morena I SEZ Transmission Limited. The trust also has plans for developing new greenfield transmission and BESS projects.
Key Risks to Monitor
Investors will want to note that the ₹573 crore acquisition value is approximate and subject to adjustments based on final agreements. Operating BESS projects under the BOO model involves direct management responsibilities and associated operational risks. Additionally, IndiGrid Investment Managers Ltd settled a probe with SEBI in April 2024 concerning alleged InvIT rule violations, involving a ₹23.4 lakh settlement charge related to the misuse of borrowed funds.
Competitive Environment
IndiGrid operates within the infrastructure investment trust sector, facing indirect competition from entities focused on road infrastructure like National Highways Infra Trust and Cube Highways Trust. In the broader power infrastructure space, key competitors include state-owned Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd, integrated utility Tata Power Company Ltd, and private players such as Adani Transmission Ltd.
What to Track Next
Moving forward, tracking will focus on the finalization of acquisition cost adjustments, the project's commercial operation commencement, and actual revenue generation. Continued monitoring of IndiGrid's expansion in BESS and transmission, along with any evolving regulatory aspects for InvITs or energy storage, will also be important.
