Coal India Ventures into Energy Storage with ₹1057 Cr Telangana Project
Coal India Limited (CIL) has received a Letter of Award (LOA) for a significant ₹1057 crore Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Telangana. Awarded by Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited (TS-GENCO), this move represents a key step in CIL's diversification into energy infrastructure, moving beyond its core coal business. The LOA was received on March 28, 2026.
The project involves establishing a 750 MWh BESS plant, capable of delivering 187.5 MW for four hours, at Choutuppal, Telangana. The estimated project cost is ₹1057.09 crore, with an awarded tariff of ₹3.14 lakh per MW per month.
This venture is crucial for CIL's energy transition strategy. By entering the grid-scale energy storage sector, the company aims to support India's growing need for integrating renewable energy sources and enhancing grid stability.
Execution of the BESS plant is scheduled to commence within 18 months of signing the Balance of System Agreement (BESPA).
However, potential challenges exist. These include securing the BESPA promptly and meeting the 18-month construction deadline, alongside ensuring the plant's operational efficiency.
CIL's entry into BESS places it among leading Indian power sector players like NTPC, Tata Power, and Adani Green Energy, all actively investing in renewable energy and storage solutions.
Key developments to monitor include the signing of the BESPA, the start of the 18-month execution period, and future updates from CIL on its new energy initiatives.
