United Spirits Gets Temporary Reprieve in Water Charge Dispute
United Spirits Limited (USL) is facing a significant ₹441.95 crore demand for water charges from the Water Resources Department (WRD), covering the period from November 2018 to February 2026.
USL challenged this substantial financial claim, but the Bombay High Court issued notices without granting interim protection. The Supreme Court has now intervened, ordering the company to deposit ₹50 crore as an interim measure for four weeks. This deposit provides temporary relief while the company's legal challenge continues.
The Supreme Court's order also restrains the WRD from taking coercive action against USL during this period, provided the ₹50 crore deposit is made.
This litigation represents a material financial claim against United Spirits, India's leading spirits manufacturer and a subsidiary of Diageo. While the company believes it has a strong case and anticipates no significant long-term implications, the judicial process and its ultimate outcome are critical. Such disputes are common for large companies operating within India's heavily regulated spirits industry, which often face tax and regulatory challenges.
The company's writ petition challenging the ₹441.95 crore demand remains pending adjudication before the Bombay High Court. Shareholders will be monitoring the proceedings and the potential future financial obligation if the demand is upheld.
