Clean Science Q2 Revenue Hits Record Rs 295 Crore, Margins Under Pressure

Clean Science and Technology reported record consolidated quarterly revenue of Rs 295 crore, up 12% YoY, led by strong volume growth in the HALS segment. Despite top-line success, the company is grappling with margin compression due to elevated raw material costs and stiff competition from Chinese producers, which limits pricing power. Management is focusing on capacity expansion and backward integration to improve long-term cost competitiveness.

Clean Science Posts Record Revenue Amid Margin Challenges

Revenue grew to Rs 295 crore with a 12% YoY increase while PAT stood at Rs 56 crore.

Reader Takeaway: Strong volume growth in HALS is offset by raw material inflation and intense competitive pricing pressure.

What just happened

Clean Science and Technology reported record consolidated revenue of Rs 295 crore for the second quarter of FY27, reflecting a 12% increase compared to the previous year. The growth was primarily volume-led, particularly within the HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers) segment, which saw revenues double year-on-year. However, the bottom line felt the impact of rising costs for key raw materials like phenol, acetone, and methanol, which surged by 50-100%.

Why this matters

Investors are witnessing a divergence between operational scale and profitability. While the company is successfully capturing market share and scaling capacity, it lacks the pricing power to pass on the spike in feedstock costs to customers, largely due to aggressive pricing from Chinese competitors. This has compressed EBITDA and PAT margins, making cost-efficiency initiatives critical for future earnings stability.

Strategy and Capex

The company is aggressively pursuing backward integration to produce key HALS precursors in-house, a move expected to boost margins by 5-7% in specific segments. Additionally, capital expenditure remains high, with Rs 50 crore infused into subsidiaries during Q2, bringing the half-year total to Rs 150 crore. Management is also expanding HALS capacity to 12,500 tons and expects Performance Chemical 2 to commercialize by late FY27.

Risks to watch

Margin pressure remains the primary concern as global crude-linked feedstock prices stay volatile. The inability to compete with Chinese pricing has already forced the company to put the Barbituric Acid project on hold. The successful ramp-up of HALS capacity utilization, currently at 30-40%, is vital to achieving the operational leverage needed to restore margin health.

Context metrics

Consolidated raw material costs rose to 43.3% of revenue compared to 39.7% in previous periods. HALS capacity utilization is targeted to rise from current levels to 55-60% in the coming quarters.
