CSB Bank Q2 Profit Rises 14% to Rs 183 Crore

Net Profit: Rs 183 Cr (up 14% YoY) | Net Interest Income: Rs 510 Cr (up 20% YoY)

Reader Takeaway: Improved NIMs and steady asset quality support growth, though shareholders should watch the CASA ratio and gold loan diversification.

What just happened

CSB Bank announced its financial results for the quarter ending September 2026. The bank recorded a net profit of Rs 183 crore, driven by a strong 20% jump in Net Interest Income (NII) to Rs 510 crore. Operating profit reached Rs 276 crore, marking a 10% sequential increase. The Net Interest Margin (NIM) improved to 3.81% from 3.66% in the previous quarter, reflecting better yield management.

Why this matters

This performance indicates the bank’s successful pivot into its "scale phase." By balancing wholesale and SME yields, the bank has managed to keep its asset quality stable, with Gross NPA at 1.58% and Net NPA at 0.33%. The bank also maintains a solid provisioning buffer of Rs 177 crore above regulatory requirements, providing comfort to investors regarding loan losses.

Business and Operations

Deposits grew by 18% year-on-year, though the CASA ratio remains a focus area at 18.96%. The bank’s gold loan portfolio grew by 36% year-on-year. However, management intends to rebalance this, targeting to bring the gold loan share down to 50% of total advances from the current 53%. Infrastructure and technology investments contributed to a rise in operating expenses this quarter.

Management Guidance

Management is aiming for 30% to 50% growth faster than the industry system. Key financial targets include reaching an ROA of 1.5% to 1.8% next year and reducing the cost of funds to approximately 6%. Management also clarified that the bank has not recently discussed any Fairfax-IDBI transactions and confirmed that Fairfax holds no deposits with the bank.

Risks to watch

Investors should monitor the CASA ratio, which is currently lagging behind term deposit growth. Additionally, macro-economic factors such as geopolitical uncertainty and potential climate-related disruptions remain external risks to the bank's projected growth trajectory.
